Black Below the Tree
Have you ever hurt yourself on purpose? What I mean is: Have you ever purposely done something you knew would cause yourself pain because it helps someone else? Or better yet, have you ever sat by and watched it happen, knowing you'll be worse for the wear?
Why do people do that sometimes? It would be so much easier to just walk away and let things fall without having to trouble yourself. But you don't. You see it coming and you stand arms out on the tracks. You take a chunk of the force onto your own frame just to help another.
The only thing that ever seems to come from this is more emotions. Not the good ones like amusement, or glee. Only the bad ones. The ones that make it hard to sleep even after the perfect night. I wish there was a away to do it without the suffering and loneliness. A way for everyone to win, and everyone's lives to go on into a beautiful sunset. But there isn't.
Maybe we do it, so we can offer someone a softer place to land. I guess that's enough for me. It's going to have to be enough. I should probably welcome this. Being called upon in a time of help, shows more than need, it shows trust. It shows a belief that maybe you can make things better.
I know why people do it. Because sometimes the most difficult things are also the most rewarding. Sometimes what may seem like a burden, is really a gift.
