Please Call it Emo

A friend's blog spurred me to write this. It isn't meant as any kind of insult, just our opinions used to be similar and now they are much further apart.

The only real way I am able to find music now, music that's new and different is because of titles given to certain genres. Emo originally stood for emotional I guess, the kind of ambient almost whinny (whine-E I can't spell it) music about breaking up with women. Now it just stands for a certain sound of music which is fine. The same goes for alternative. What is an alternative? It's simply another option. Originally it was coined as an alternative for pop and hip hop. Eventually Labels saw the gold mine waiting and signed these very same anti corporate bands to contracts.

Now they simply mean the genre. Think of them gaining meaning instead of it being used wrong. Alternative will always be an alternative for every type of music it is not. Alternative cannot just mean different. There's Rap than can be different, but it's Rap still.

RPGs. Role Playing Games. In them you assume a certain role and go about saving the world from madman_001. But aren't you playing a role in all games? If your playing halo, your playing the role of Master chief. If your playing Grand Theft Auto, your playing the role of dumbass who paid for that shit. So in essence, a genre defining title just comes to be loosely based around it's original definition.

I love Emo, and Alternative and without those titles I would never find new music. Radios have been useless for some time, but there are a few outs for those in search of something they can't find. Purevolume is a wonderful place to search for just what you want to hear. Broken down into genres you can get something close to what you want and just continue from there.

Find what you like, and just like it. Who cares if they are signed to a major label, or frantically searching for a quarter to buy an Egg McMuffin. People may not agree with you, but luckily we're equipped with a part of our brain that can make us not care what people think.

Anyway I kinda forgot where I was going with this whole thing. I wish I was tired.

I was just kind of beating off when I wrote that...well, there's some seriousness to it and you make a good point...Rap still sucks.

O'Doil rules!
