Please Call it Emo

A friend's blog spurred me to write this. It isn't meant as any kind of insult, just our opinions used to be similar and now they are much further apart.

The only real way I am able to find music now, music that's new and different is because of titles given to certain genres. Emo originally stood for emotional I guess, the kind of ambient almost whinny (whine-E I can't spell it) music about breaking up with women. Now it just stands for a certain sound of music which is fine. The same goes for alternative. What is an alternative? It's simply another option. Originally it was coined as an alternative for pop and hip hop. Eventually Labels saw the gold mine waiting and signed these very same anti corporate bands to contracts.

Now they simply mean the genre. Think of them gaining meaning instead of it being used wrong. Alternative will always be an alternative for every type of music it is not. Alternative cannot just mean different. There's Rap than can be different, but it's Rap still.

RPGs. Role Playing Games. In them you assume a certain role and go about saving the world from madman_001. But aren't you playing a role in all games? If your playing halo, your playing the role of Master chief. If your playing Grand Theft Auto, your playing the role of dumbass who paid for that shit. So in essence, a genre defining title just comes to be loosely based around it's original definition.

I love Emo, and Alternative and without those titles I would never find new music. Radios have been useless for some time, but there are a few outs for those in search of something they can't find. Purevolume is a wonderful place to search for just what you want to hear. Broken down into genres you can get something close to what you want and just continue from there.

Find what you like, and just like it. Who cares if they are signed to a major label, or frantically searching for a quarter to buy an Egg McMuffin. People may not agree with you, but luckily we're equipped with a part of our brain that can make us not care what people think.

Anyway I kinda forgot where I was going with this whole thing. I wish I was tired.

Watching Paint Dry

PTI is almost over, which means the end of my daily ESPN two hour block of goodness. I am so beyond bored right now. I don't really want to play WOW because I'm still burned out. I beat Xeno 2, Pirates is becoming repetitive, and I can't think of anything else I have that I wan t to play.

There is a few games I could go get, but I don't want to spend any money right now. I've already spent more than enough this month. I'm bored to the point where I'm getting sleepy again, even though I just woke up two hours ago.

Looked up some music last night and found a couple good leads. Started organizing my Music Favorites section on my PC also, but it's a big section and will take a couple times to get it finished. At least the Simpsons starts in six minutes.

I talked to someone last night I hadn't talked to in two months. Not actual talking, but online talking. Then today they call. Luckily I was asleep, so I didn't have to deal with it. Just because someone talks to you for a few minutes on the computer does not mean they want to hear your voice the next day.

McDonald's Urban approach on marketing makes me hate them. The best nuggets on Earth are not enough to warrant insulting horrible marketing that has nothing to do with your food.

On the flipside Burger King's new commercials rule. Brooke Burke, Hootie, hot chicks = sells food.

Spiders on the Edge

Some time ago I set life down somewhere. I left the room for a minute and then came back to find it gone. Had I misplaced it? No, I knew right where I had left it, but from that point on, my eyes never scanned that spot. In a weird hypnotic way, I somehow taught myself to ignore it and go on about things with no meaning.

Don't get me wrong, they have great meaning to me. But on the grand scale of things, they are just a small leaf on the forests floor. I do things to escape. I can see the light dim a fraction more with each day but I just keep right on looking the other direction. My own little world. When the door is shut and the shades are pulled I am happy. It's only when time peeks in that I have a hard time dealing with it. But time peeks in anyway, I can't stop that.

Late last year I played a lot of WOW. Too much in fact, but it was so much fun I didn't care. Then time peeked in, and I dealt with a ton of drama bullshit around the new year that made me hate the light I was exposed to.

I locked the door tighter this time. Baten Kaitos was my new window shade. Metroid Prime 2 was a new lock on my door. WOW, once more, was a strong chair pushed under the knob preventing intrusion. RE4 became a padlock. And most recently, Xenosaga 2, Warioware Touched!, and Sid Meier's Pirates, have been blankets shoved into any small opening where time might spy on me.

But he always gets in. It's the same thing every time, and he makes sure I see him. I find myself frantically looking for another key to solitude, but there comes a point when the store is out of new options. I have ideas, but they would be temporary fixes, coupled with more debt, which makes them hardly a solution.

None of it is a solution. It's just another fix trying to find a way to satisfy the growing need that comes from addiction. It's too bad I can't get away from it. It's all the more powerful that I don't want to get away from it. Everything is ok when I feel that rush. When I walk into Ironforge, or land on the Elsa. I hear the flowers in Hyrule are beautiful this time of year.
